Subject: [downtime] CS Storage Downtime, Tuesday, July 24, 2018, 05:00-08:00

Date: Tuesday, July 24, 2018 (05:00-08:00)

Who is affected:
All users of the CS department computing.

What is happening:
We are upgrading our storage operating system, which requires for CS
storage to be rebooted. We expect that some of the SMB/CIFS clients will
have to reconnect, but NFS service will be continuous. The rest of CS
services should not be affected.

Why is it happening:
This is necessary in order to fix numerous bugs on our file system.

We will post updates to the status page: http://www.csstaff.org
as necessary.

If this downtime will cause you undue hardship, please contact
csstaff@cs.princeton.edu immediately, so we can discuss options to reduce
any negative impact. Your patience is appreciated.

Sincerely,
CS Staff

Update as of 07:36: The upgrade process is proceeding more slowly than expected. While interruption is still expected to be minimal, we will be continuing work beyond the original window. We expect the upgrade to be completed by 09:00.

Virtual Web Server Down – 1/20/2011

As of 11:30 PM on Thursday, January 20, the virtual web server, virtweb, is unavailable due to memory problems. This issue impacts all project-related web sites within the CS Department. Correcting the problem requires on-site access to the host and will be addressed on Friday morning.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

UPDATE: 1/21/2011 – One or more processes on the virtweb server had a problem with run-away memory allocation requests. The server was rebooted this morning and all of the web sites hosted on it are now available.

Fileserver Problems

Our main department fileserver is having problems providing NFS (and probably SMB) service to the systems in the department. Impacted services include the main department web server (www.cs.princeton.edu), virtual web servers, the CS public unix machines (portal) and the c2 cluster. So far, e-mail appears to be working normally.

We have collected debugging information and sent it to the vendor for analysis. We are monitoring the situation and doing what we can to keep services up. Please send e-mail to csstaff if you have any new issues to report. We will update this space as we know more.
